Fair-use and automatic service protections

Learn what fair use means for paid monitoring, which automatic safeguards may temporarily change behavior, and what Uptime Basics does not charge for.

Uptime Basics is designed for legitimate monitoring of websites and endpoints you own, operate, administer, or are authorized to monitor. Fair-use safeguards keep one prolonged failure or unusually active account from reducing monitoring and notification reliability for other customers.

What normal use includes

Normal use includes:

  • Running the number of monitors and intervals included with your plan.
  • Monitoring a website through a real outage, including a long-running incident.
  • Receiving email alerts for meaningful state changes.
  • Using the monthly SMS allowance included with your plan.
  • Reviewing incidents, detailed logs, exports, diagnostics, and status pages.
  • Using supported request headers and authentication for endpoints you are authorized to access.

A website going down does not violate fair use. An automatic adjustment during an outage is not an accusation of abuse.

Customer-visible automatic safeguards

Uptime Basics may temporarily:

  • Change a failing monitor's effective interval to five minutes after 24 hours and 15 minutes after 72 hours.
  • Reduce a timeout after repeated full-timeout failures.
  • Pause a timeout-heavy monitor when sustained failures threaten reliable processing.
  • Suppress duplicate or unusually repeated notifications.
  • Delay repeated deep diagnostics when a recent diagnostic already covers the same incident.

The configured interval remains saved and returns automatically after recovery where applicable. These protections do not rewrite Up or Down results.

What happens to monitoring data

While a protection is active:

  • Checks continue at the effective interval unless the monitor is explicitly paused.
  • Check results and incidents continue to follow the published retention policy.
  • A suppressed notification does not remove the underlying check or incident event.
  • The dashboard or Monitor Details identifies customer-visible adjustments.

Charges and plan access

Automatic protections do not create usage overage charges. They do not downgrade the account, remove paid plan features, or require an upgrade to clear.

Email alerts are included with each paid plan, subject to anti-duplicate and fair-use safeguards. They are not an unlimited bulk-email service. SMS uses the separately published monthly segment allowance for each plan.

Misuse and enforcement

Fair-use adjustments are different from enforcement for misuse. Uptime Basics may separately restrict or suspend activity involving unauthorized monitoring, denial-of-service behavior, vulnerability probing, evasion of technical controls, phishing, scraping, spam, impersonation, or unlawful activity.

Operational abuse thresholds are restricted because publishing them could help someone evade protections. Customer-facing plan limits and behavior changes remain documented in plain language.

If you believe a protection is incorrect

  1. Open the affected monitor and review the protection notice.
  2. Check the effective interval, timeout, latest diagnosis, and incident history.
  3. Correct any URL, firewall, authentication, accepted-status, or timeout issue.
  4. Contact Uptime Basics Support if the notice remains after recovery.

Include the account email, monitor name, approximate start time, and a screenshot of the notice. Do not include passwords, authorization headers, or private request secrets.
