Domain-expiry monitoring looks for a published registration-expiration date and warns you before the registered domain reaches it. It is optional, disabled by default, and available on Starter, Plus, and Pro.
What domain is checked
Uptime Basics derives the registrable domain from the monitor hostname. For example, a monitor for shop.example.com checks the registration data associated with example.com when that information is available.
This is different from checking whether the website responds, whether DNS currently resolves, or whether the SSL certificate is valid.
Enable domain monitoring on a new monitor
- From the dashboard, select New Monitor.
- Enter the site name and URL.
- Turn on Domain expiry in the optional monitoring section.
- Under Warn me, choose 60, 30, or 14 days before expiry.
- Finish the remaining settings and select Create Monitor.
Enable it on an existing monitor
- Open the monitor.
- Open Expiry Monitoring under Monitor Tools.
- Select Domain expiry.
- Choose Warn at 60 days, Warn at 30 days, or Warn at 14 days.
- Select Save expiry monitoring.
After a lookup completes, the section can show the known expiry date, days remaining, status, and Last checked time. It can also ask you to confirm a renewal with the registrar when a public expiry date moves forward close to the previous expiry date.
Where the date comes from
Uptime Basics uses public Registration Data Access Protocol data. Registry and registrar publication practices vary, so some domains do not return a usable expiration event.
If a reliable date is unavailable, the page reports an unknown or error result instead of estimating or inventing one. Always keep registrar renewal notices and billing contacts current as your primary control.
A registry can temporarily move an expiry date forward during an auto-renew grace period even when the registrant has not completed payment with the registrar. Uptime Basics therefore treats this pattern as Renewal needs confirmation, not as proof that the domain was renewed. Sign in to the registrar, confirm renewal and payment, and then select I confirmed the renewal on the monitor.
How often it runs
Enabled domain-expiry checks run approximately once every 24 hours. Pausing the monitor stops these checks until the monitor is active again.
The daily schedule is independent of the monitor's availability interval.
Alerts and availability
When the result changes to Warning, Expired, Error, Renewal needs confirmation, or Registration needs attention, eligible monitor Alert Channels can receive a state-change notification. An unchanged warning is not repeated every day. Returning to Healthy can queue a recovery notification.
Domain-expiry monitoring does not change Up or Down status, uptime percentage, or incidents. If domain expiry later causes DNS or availability failure, those normal checks handle that outage separately.
