Domain-expiry monitoring uses public Registration Data Access Protocol information. Some registries do not publish a usable expiration event, and temporary lookup problems can also prevent Uptime Basics from retrieving one.
When a reliable date is unavailable, Uptime Basics reports Unknown or Error instead of estimating a date.
Common reasons

Privacy protection normally hides contact information, but registry publication rules can also affect which lifecycle events are returned.
Check the exact domain being monitored
Uptime Basics derives a registrable domain from the monitor hostname. A monitor for shop.example.com normally looks up example.com.
If the hostname belongs to a hosting platform, website builder, or another organization, the underlying registered domain may not be yours to renew. Monitor a hostname on a domain your organization controls when you need your own registration reminder.
What to do
- Sign in to the registrar account and confirm the registered domain, expiry date, renewal state, and payment method.
- Confirm auto-renewal and registrar notifications are enabled.
- Check that ownership, billing, and recovery contacts are current.
- Allow the next approximately daily lookup to run after a renewal or temporary provider problem.
- If the error continues, contact support with the monitor name, hostname, Last checked time, and displayed error.
The registrar is the authoritative source for whether your domain will renew. Do not postpone renewal because a public lookup is unavailable or shows a different date.
Alerts for unavailable data
Error is a problem state. If the result changes into Error and the monitor has eligible Alert Channels, Uptime Basics can queue a domain-expiry error notification. The same unchanged error is not sent every day.
Returning to a Healthy result can queue a recovery notification. Domain-expiry errors do not make the website monitor Down or create an incident.
