Password requirements and accepted characters

Review the length, character, symbol, spacing, and reuse rules enforced when you create a new Uptime Basics password.

A new Uptime Basics password must satisfy every rule on this page. These requirements apply when you change a password from Account settings and when the identity service asks you to choose a replacement password.

Required password rules

Your password must:

  • contain between 8 and 256 characters;
  • include at least one uppercase letter from A-Z;
  • include at least one lowercase letter from a-z;
  • include at least one number from 0-9;
  • include at least one accepted symbol;
  • have no space at the beginning or end; and
  • be different from your current password.

The new password and confirmation must match exactly. Passwords are case-sensitive.

Accepted symbols

The following symbols satisfy the symbol requirement:

^ $ * . [ ] { } ( ) ? " ! @ # % & / \ , > < ' : ; | _ ~ ` = + -

Spaces are allowed inside a password. A single space between non-space characters can also satisfy the symbol requirement. For example, MyPass word1$ follows the spacing rule. A password beginning or ending with a space is rejected.

For predictable sign-in across devices and password managers, use letters, numbers, and the symbols shown above. If a keyboard offers a visually similar character that is not in the list, use one of the listed symbols instead.

Build a strong password

  • Prefer a longer unique password rather than only meeting the eight-character minimum.
  • Do not reuse a password from another website or service.
  • A password manager can generate and store a long random password.
  • Do not include your email address, company name, monitor URL, or other easily guessed account information.
  • Enable two-factor authentication for protection beyond the password itself.

Why a password may be rejected

The page identifies the first requirement it finds that is not satisfied. Check that:

  • all three password fields contain the intended values;
  • the current password is correct;
  • the new and confirmation values match;
  • no leading or trailing space was added during copy and paste; and
  • the new password is not the same as the current password.
