Account-wide alert defaults decide which channels and verified destinations are preselected when you create a monitor. After creation, each monitor keeps its own saved alert settings.
Configure the defaults
- Open Account from the customer application.
- Select Alerts.
- Under Default email alerts, turn email alerts on or off.
- Select a Default alert email from your verified email addresses.
- Under Default SMS alerts, turn SMS alerts on or off.
- Select a Default alert phone from your verified Canadian or US phone numbers.
Changes save automatically. A confirmation message appears after each setting is stored.
What each setting controls
- Default email alerts preselects email for new monitors.
- Default alert email is offered as the destination when a new monitor is created. It is also the fallback for a monitor without its own email destination.
- Default SMS alerts preselects SMS for new monitors when a verified phone number exists.
- Default alert phone is offered as the SMS destination for new monitors and is the fallback for a monitor without its own phone destination.
Changing a default affects monitors created afterward. It does not silently disable or enable the channel on existing monitors.
Existing monitors and new defaults
Changing a default does not replace an explicitly selected destination or channel on an existing monitor. Open Monitor Details > Alert Channels to review or change a particular monitor.
This lets one monitor notify an operations address while another notifies a site owner, without changing the rest of the account.
Verified destinations are required
Only verified destinations appear in the default selectors. If a selector is empty:
- Add and verify an email under Account > Alerts > Verified emails.
- Add and verify a phone under Account > Alerts > Verified phone numbers.
You can store up to eight email destinations and eight phone destinations. SMS alerts currently support Canadian and US numbers.
SMS allowance behavior
Monitor-alert SMS messages use the monthly allowance included with the plan. The Alerts page shows used and remaining segments. The allowance resets at 12:00 AM UTC on the first day of each calendar month, unused segments do not roll over, and verification codes do not use the allowance.
If the SMS allowance is exhausted, SMS monitor alerts pause until the next reset. Email alerts continue when email is enabled.
If alerts still do not arrive
Check the saved monitor configuration and destination:
- Confirm the destination is verified under Account > Alerts.
- Open the monitor and confirm the channel is enabled under Alert Channels.
- Confirm the intended verified destination is selected for that monitor.
- Use Send test email or Send test SMS on Monitor Details.
- Review Alert History for queued, delivered, failed, or suppressed notifications.
Account defaults do not change how an outage is confirmed. They only control where eligible notifications can be delivered.
