Too many password attempts: when to retry

Understand the password-change attempt limit, what to do during the cooldown, and when to use password recovery instead.

Uptime Basics limits password changes to five attempts per hour. This protects the account from repeated password guessing and accidental rapid submissions.

When the limit is reached

The Security tab reports that there have been too many password-change attempts. The page does not show a live countdown.

  1. Stop submitting password changes.
  2. Wait until the one-hour attempt window has passed.
  3. Sign out and sign back in if the current session is old.
  4. Make one careful attempt using the current password and a compliant new password.

Repeatedly selecting Update password during the cooldown does not bypass the protection and can continue to return the same message.

Check before trying again

  • Confirm that Current password contains the password currently used to sign in.
  • Make sure New password and Confirm new password match exactly.
  • Check all password requirements and accepted characters.
  • Use the Show buttons temporarily if you need to inspect what was entered.

If you do not know the current password

Do not use the password-change form to guess it. Sign out, choose the password-recovery option on the sign-in page, and follow the identity-service instructions.

If the message remains after waiting

Confirm that more than one hour has passed since the most recent series of attempts, then retry once. If the request is still rejected, contact Uptime Basics support and include the approximate time of the last attempt and the message shown. Never include either password or a security code.
