Verify ownership of a monitored domain

Learn why status-page ownership verification is required, what it proves, and which DNS, file, or meta-tag method to use.

A basic customer status page can be enabled without ownership verification. Verification is required before you can make that page appear to represent the monitored website through custom branding, analytics, or a custom status domain.

What ownership verification proves

Ownership verification demonstrates control of the monitored website or domain. It is separate from verifying an account email, an alert destination, a phone number, or an authenticator app.

Completing signup or verifying an alert email does not prove website ownership. Completing domain ownership verification does not change account sign-in or alert destinations.

Available methods

Method Best when you can access What Uptime Basics checks
DNS TXT record DNS settings A generated token at the required DNS name
Verification file Website files A generated token in /.well-known/uptimebasics-verification.txt
HTML meta tag Website page template A generated verification meta tag on the monitored website

Use the method that matches the access you already have. You can change methods from the Ownership section of the status-page settings.

Verify the domain

  1. Open the monitor and choose Public Status Page.
  2. Select Set up Page or Manage Settings.
  3. Open Ownership.
  4. Choose DNS, verification file, or meta tag.
  5. Add the generated record, file, or tag to the monitored website.
  6. Select Check verification.

After verification succeeds, branding, analytics, and custom-domain controls become available.

Verification records

Uptime Basics records the method, result, timestamps, and privacy-protective evidence needed to support abuse prevention, ownership disputes, and legal review. Raw verification codes and unrelated account secrets are not exposed on the public status page.
