Upgrade a plan and understand proration

Review the exact Stripe charge, confirm an immediate plan upgrade, and understand credits and charges for the remaining billing period.

An upgrade gives the account its higher monitor and one-minute limits immediately after Stripe successfully processes the change. Before anything is charged, Uptime Basics displays a Stripe-generated transaction preview for your review.

Upgrade the plan

  1. Open Account > Billing.
  2. Review the Starter, Plus, and Pro cards.
  3. Select the higher plan you want.
  4. Review the confirmation receipt, including the current plan, new plan, future monthly price, adjustment lines, and Charge due now.
  5. Select Confirm plan plan only when the details are correct.

Uptime Basics submits the change to Stripe using the subscription's saved payment method. After Stripe accepts the payment and subscription update, the account receives the new plan limits and a confirmation summarizes the features now available.

How proration works

For an active paid subscription, Stripe calculates the unused value of the current lower-priced plan and the cost of the higher-priced plan for the remaining time in the same billing period.

A typical preview can contain:

  • a credit for unused time on the current plan;
  • a charge for the remaining time on the new plan;
  • applicable discounts, account credits, or taxes; and
  • the final amount due immediately.

The difference is invoiced when you confirm the upgrade. Future renewals use the full monthly price of the new plan. The exact amount depends on when the upgrade occurs, so always use the displayed Charge due now rather than estimating it from the monthly prices.

Upgrading during a trial

Upgrading during the 30-day Starter trial ends the trial immediately. The confirmation shows the amount Stripe will charge to begin the selected paid plan now. The paid subscription then follows its normal monthly renewal schedule.

Do not confirm a trial upgrade if you intend to continue using the remaining free-trial time.

If payment is not completed

The higher plan is not considered active until Stripe accepts the subscription update. If the saved payment method cannot complete the charge, follow the payment message, update the payment method if necessary, and try again.

The plan buttons are disabled while authoritative billing information loads, which prevents a change from being submitted against an outdated subscription state.

Upgrade versus downgrade timing

  • Upgrade: charged and applied immediately after confirmation.
  • Downgrade: scheduled for the next renewal date so the current paid limits remain available through the end of the billing period.

A downgrade can also require monitor and interval selections before it can be scheduled. It does not use the immediate upgrade process described here.
